Britney Spears Album : Britney

Where Britney Spears’s first two albums hewed to the early-’60s formula of one strong single plus a stack of filler–a fair bit of which ended up on the radio anyway–her third justifies itself as a full-length listen. Led by the single “I’m a Slave 4 U,” a Neptunes-helmed piece of electrofunk that promises she’ll do anything you want as long as it’s dancing, the album continues through superior versions of Spears’s poses.

Calculated frustration with the adult world? Calculated independence? Sheer celebration? Check, check, and check: “Overprotected,” “Let Me Be,” and a cover of “I Love Rock & Roll” that brings to mind its bubblegum roots. Even without the joyous disco tribute of “Anticipating” and the not-icky ballad “I’m Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman” providing symbolic respite from the rest of this machine-tooled music, Britney is one of the most human discs of the current teen-pop boom. If it spins off the deserved string of radio/video smashes, it may even buy this superstar a second 15 minutes.

Review 1:

1. “I’m A Slave 4 U”- An awesome dance song! The lyrics are slightly odd, but it’s still cool. 4.5/5

2. “Overprotected”- A really cool song- one of the best on the album. A perfect song for anybody who feels like they’re being treated like a child. 5/5

3. “Lonely”- This song has a very cool beat to it. I think anybody can relate to this song (about a girl who’s left her boyfriend and proclaiming she’s fine without him because he wasted her time). 5/5

4. “I’m Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman”- A very pretty song with nice lyrics. 4.5/5

5. “Boys”- I love this song’s upbeat feel to it. Very nice! 5/5

6. “Anticipating”- This song sounds out of place on this album. It’s very “bubble-gum pop.” This is the worse song on the CD. 2.5/5

7. “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll”- The opening part of this song rocks. The guitar used in it sounds great! 4.5/5

8. “Cinderella”- This is another awesome song that I think anybody can relate to. For some reason, it feels to me like it has an 80s sound to it! 5/5

9. “Let Me Be”- This is an ok song. Not one of my favorites, but not a bad song, either 4/5

10. “Bombastic Love”- This has a weird title to it, but it’s pretty cool! 4/5

11. “That’s Where You Take Me”- This has such a beautiful melody to it! A great love song. 5/5

12. “What It’s Like To Be Me”- A cool song and I’m sure some other singers feel this way, too! 4/5

Overall, “Britney” shows a more edgier Britney Spears, which is a good change! This CD is really cool and has some awesome songs on it.
